This test method is designed for testing flat samples with uniform cross section, although in some applications the methodology can be extended to evaluate formed parts, pass-throughs, or other assemblies to determine their acoustical properties. For non-flat parts or assemblies where transmitted sound varies strongly across the test sample surface, a more appropriate methodology would be ASTM E90 (with a reverberant receiving chamber) or ASTM E2249 (intensity method with an anechoic or hemi-anechoic receiving chamber).

Several types of test specimens are identified to suit different types of materials and test rates. This document is intended for strain rates between 10-3/s and 103/s. Test procedures for rates of 10-2/s and below; i.e., quasi-static conditions, are described in ASTM D 638 and ISO 527-1. The procedures in this document include quasi-static testing in order to provide a common test rate for both quasi-static and dynamic test programs. The general procedures listed in ASTM D 638 and ISO 527-1 should be followed when appropriate. The main purpose of this document is to determine the relative effects of increasing strain rate on the measured material properties. Data generated from these tests are comparative in nature.

It is recommended that the specific operating conditions be carefully reviewed on the basis of actual installation data. Cooling requirements are affected by all heat exchangers that are cooled by the fan drive system. These may include radiators, condensers, charge air coolers, oil coolers, and others. Because of the variation in size, shape, configuration, and mountings available in cooling fans and fan drive systems, specific test devices have not been included. Using known power/speed relationships for a given fan, this procedure can be used to calculate the fan drive system’s power consumption for engine cooling systems using fixed ratio, viscous or speed modulating, and mechanical on/off fan drives including electronically activated fan drives.

Automotive and railroad diesel fuels, in general, are derived from petroleum refinery products which are commonly referred to as middle distillates. Middle distillates represent products which have a higher boiling range than gasoline and are obtained from fractional distillation of the crude oil or from streams from other refining processes. Finished diesel fuels represent blends of middle distillates. The properties of commercial distillate diesel fuels depend on the refinery practices employed and the nature of the crude oils from which they are derived. Thus, they may differ both with and within the region in which they are manufactured. Such fuels generally boil over a range between 163 and 371 °C (325 to 700 °F). Their makeup can represent various combinations of volatility, ignition quality, viscosity, sulfur level, gravity, and other characteristics. Additives may be used to impart special properties to the finished diesel fuel.
