Forward Lighting Halogen Bulb Performance Requirements for Motor Vehicles

This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances. This document establishes performance requirements, material requirements, design requirements, and design guidelines for forward lighting replaceable bulbs.


Proposed SAE J2560 [Modified Sections of J1383]:

a. SAE J2560 has been created as a result of rewriting SAE J1383. The intent is to remove all forward lighting halogen bulb information from SAE J1383 and place it in this new SAE J2560 document.

b. Removed all text, figures and tables from J1383 that do not apply to forward lighting halogen bulbs. Ref. Text sections - 3.1, 3.2 , 3.4-3.7, 3.12-3.17, 3.19. 3.20, 3.26, 3.27, 4.3-4.6, 5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.8-5.12, 5.15-5.19, 6.1, 6.2, 6.4, 6.5, 6.9-6.13, 6.16-6.22, 7.1, 7.2, 7.4 items a, b, d, 7.6, 7.7. Ref. Figures - 1, 3-8, 11-18, 20-32 Ref. Tables - 3-9

c. Revised numerical order of definitions, identification code designation, tests, performance requirements and guidelines.

d. Re-numbered figures and tables to provide continuity to this new document.

e. A new color test (Section 5.3) and Color Requirements (Section 6.3) are added, including Figures 3 and 4. The color test is based on the Global Working Group on the Investigation into the Effects of Absorptive and Interference Coatings Applied on Replaceable Headlamp Bulbs.

f. In the color test (section 5.3) section requires the test of the high beam (major) filament for double filament bulbs due to the shield in H4/HB2, which partly obscures the low beam (minor) filament.

g. Added Vibration Test from IEC (Section 5.8)

h. Added the Daytime Running Lamp Luminous Flux Maintenance Guideline and Life Durability Guideline verbatim from SAE J2087, as the SAE J2087 standard removed this guideline in the latest revision.

i. In cases where bulb dimensions are elsewhere documented, such as in 49CFR564 docket 98-3397, ECE R37, and/or IEC (IEC-60809, IEC-60061-1, and IEC-60061) bulb drawings were not duplicated to avoid showing discrepancies between the standards. Therefore this document contains no figures of bulbs H1, H3, H7, but references to the applicable standards.

j. Revision history of the figures: Figures 9, 11, 19, 20, 27, 30, 31, 33, and 40 were copied from J1383 and remain unchanged Figures 1, 2, 5, 6, 13, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26, 28, 34, 36, 37, 38, and 39 were redrawn but remain unchanged

Figures 3, 4 and 10 are new Figures 7, 8, 12, 17, and 25 had tolerances on dimensions updated to reflect the same as in Part 564 docket Figures 17, and 25 had dimensions KH and EH, respectively updated to reflect the same as in Part 564 docket Figures 15 and 23: The connector cover was marked as optional. The luminous flux test can be more accurately carried out by measuring and compensating for the absorption of the test bulb and its base Figures 14 and 22: footnote 11 was copied from updated Part 564 docket submissions Figure 29: dimension AT was updated according to the Part 564 docket submission Figure 32: "blending radii permitted" was added from the Part 564 docket submission Figures 35 and 37: HB2 tolerances were added
