Scope:

This SAE Information Report J2836 establishes use cases for communication between plug-in electric vehicles and the electric power grid, for energy transfer and other applications.

Rationale:

These use cases identify the equipment and interactions to support AC or DC energy transfer for grid-optimized energy transfer for plug-in vehicles. Key system elements supported are the Energy storage system, Charger/inverter, Meter/sub-meter, Control & monitoring and Communication. These will allow implementing system elements in various ways such as in the Home, Public or Business locations using either an On-board vs. off-board charger and either On-board vs. off-board controls (e.g. smart plug). These use cases will allow implementing system elements by multiple users such as the Vehicle owner or operator using multiple technological solutions that include Wireless vs. PLC vs. vehicle telematics.
