SIMULATING INLET DYNAMIC TOTAL-PRESSURE DISTORTION

Scope:

The guidelines addressed in this Aerospace Information Report (AIR) applies only to the simulation and subsequent data-reduction of inlet total-pressure distortion data from Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). The guidelines can be used as part of a turbine-engine inlet-flow-distortion methodology.

Rationale:

Recent developments in Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis have shown excellent correlation with experimental results for aircraft drag and lift, aircraft loads, and steady-state inlet pressure recovery and distortion. Efforts have been made to develop time-accurate CFD to estimate inlet dynamic distortion. However, CFD estimates of dynamic inlet distortion are not sufficiently mature at this time to warrant use of these estimates in official stability audits and /or for selecting worst-case distortion patterns for qualification demonstrations. This document presents guidelines for the maturation of CFD time-accurate estimation of inlet dynamic distortion to give results equivalent to experimental inlet dynamic-distortion results.
