Electromechanical Actuator (EMA), General Characteristics & Guidelines for Aircraft Control

Scope:

Define the general characteristics and guidelines for the design of Electro-mechanical Actuator (EMA) for flight control applications or other safety critical applications. This document with provide a boilerplate for air vehicle designers to develop actuation system specifications and guidance to the EMA designers on the key characteristics, their rationale and interpretative material on the meaning and explanation of various terms and definitions on the requirements to be specified through procurements specifications for each application. It will also include guidance material on key verification and validation requirements to demonstrate the compliance of the performance, operational, maintenance (including health monitoring) and safety requirements.

Rationale:

Electromechanical actuators are being more frequently used for safety critical aerospace applications thus creating a need for a comprehensive guideline for specifying the design requirements to meet performance, operational, maintenance and safety requirements as required for aircraft controls including flight, safety critical utilities, and engine/propulsion control applications.
